Two Day TREC competition a great success!
The British Horse Society Isle of Man were blessed with glorious weather when they held a BHS Affiliated TREC competition on the weekend of 13th & 14th July. The competition covered two levels with the Level 2 competition being a qualifier for the TREC GB Championships due to be held in Wales in September.
The first day of competition was held at Palm Cottage in the Ballaugh Curraghs by kind permission of Vicki Fleming. This day was the POR (Orienteering on Horseback) phase. The competitors had to first enter the map room and copy down a map then follow their route at set speeds. If the competitors followed their route correctly then the level 1 competitors rode a distance of 9.7km and the level 2 17.4km. While riding the route competitors also had to look out for "pieces of fruit" which were used to check if they were on the correct route. This proved to be the downfall of some competitors who went home cursing the pineapple or pear they had missed!
The second day of competition was held at GGH Equitation Centre by kind permission of the Gilbey family. There were two phases to complete on this day. The first was a Control of Paces phase where competitors had to canter along a 150m long corridor as slowly as possible. They then had to walk back through the corridor as quickly as possible. Next they completed a course of 16 obstacles some of which are ridden and some led. These included things like a Water Crossing, Low Branches, Ridden Bridge, Bending and also a Ditch which caused the most entertainment ! The best thing about TREC is that no obstacle is compulsory as each one is scored individually so if you don't want to attempt something you simply tell the steward you won't be doing that obstacle.
We had some very nice prizes from our generous sponsors: Equisilva, Ballavartyn Equestrian Centre, Utopian Saddle Solutions, Horse & Rider, British Horse Society and Manx Equine Services. These were presented at the Glen Helen Inn on Sunday evening during an open meeting with the new BHS Chief Executive who had visited the Island for the weekend to meet BHS Isle of Man Committee & Members.
Thanks must go to our visiting Technical Delegate Helen Wain who had come over to oversee our competition. She provided great support to the organisers during the weekend.
The BHS IOM would like to thank Mr and Mrs Gilbey for the kind use of their facilities at GGH which provided us with a brilliant venue for the PTV course & Vicki Fleming for her hospitality on the Saturday.

The BHS IOM held another very successful TREC event on Sunday 17th March. This was the second in a series of TREC events planned for 2013 including indoor & full TREC Events. All 2013 events will score points towards the BHS IOM TREC League with prizes being awarded at the AGM in October.

A special mention should be made for Zelda Newey who was the highest placed junior and held her own against the adults to come 3rd in the highly competitive Individual Open class.
Our next TREC event is a training weekend with Helen Wain on the 13th & 14th April. Helen is also a Mary Wanless trained "Ride with your mind" Biomechanics coach and we will be providing sessions for those wanting to do TREC Training as well as Ride with your mind.

GGH Equitation Centre
We were blessed with a lovely day on the 7th October 2012 to hold our second full TREC competition of the year following the success of our Jubilee Competition back in July. We were again extremely grateful for Mr & Mrs Gilbey for the use of their GGH Equitation Centre as a base for our event. We had a change of location for the PTV (Obstacles) phase which proved to be an excellent area with lots of space for our different obstacles.
The Orienteering phase was over a lovely route – As well as roads using two of the plantations and also a couple of green lanes giving competitors a good variety. The challenge of reading their map proved tricky for some!

Following the success of our TREC events we arranged some training in November with a visiting instructor Helen Wain. She was recommended to us by the Bowland TREC group who had previously been over to the Island to introduce TREC to us back in February. We had a very enjoyable weekend with Helen and she gave us lots to think about.
Our next event will be an indoor TREC competition to be held at The Glebe, St Marks in January.

GGH Equitation Centre
The British Horse Society Isle of Man held a very successful TREC competition at GGH Equitation Centre on the 1st of July. TREC consists of three phases – Firstly competitors had to show control of paces in walk and canter, then complete an obstacle course and finally a 12km orienteering ride. We were very lucky with the weather, although the recent heavy rainfall made the water on the obstacle course challenging for some competitors. GGH`s Cross Country course provided the basis for some quite testing, but also fun obstacles for competitors. The orienteering course used roads, Green Lanes and Archallagan Plantation and needed careful map reading skills which we were pleased to see have improved since last year.

Prizes were presented at the Glen Helen on 3 rd July following a very informative talk on feeding by Dodson and Horrell representative Sarah Rushby.
